An Austrian friend of ours who has actually visited the village to visit her sponsored student, Ulrike Sprosec, retired and asked that the monetary donations be directed to DSDO! What a beautiful gift! Ulrike requested that we help a woman with a business start-up. We are so pleased that we were able to help two!
Raising chickens can provide a family with a constant source of income and protein. We hired some of our recent grads to do the construction. Two chicken coops were built.
The first recipient is Alice who lives in Dekpor Yia. She was in a very serious accident back in 1979 and as you can see in the photo, she lost her arm. Obviously, Alice has many physical challenges, but she has a very bright and upbeat personality and is eager to work hard. She is excited to begin as soon as the rains stop and is very grateful for this amazing opportunity to earn some money to support herself. She has only one grandson who helps her, so this chance to produce food and make money is so important to them!
The second lady is Hudzigor Kpogo. She lives in Dekpor Dome and is the mother of 9 children. Only one of them still lives with her part-time, but she has been left with a whole lot of grandchildren to look after. Linda and Abraham say that she is very happy to have this opportunity and can't wait to get started once the rains stop. She specifically wanted the person helping her to know that she says "thank you"! Like most people of Dekpor, she has a plot of land and grows some crops. In addition to that, she also collects salt from the salt ponds when they dry up--Linda says it is a horrible job and causes many painful cuts on her hands. Being able to raise hens will be so helpful.
It was advised that getting the hens be delayed until well after the last of the rainy season, so just now, in mid-August, the hens and feed have been purchased! Each woman received 10 hens and enough food and medicine for a 4 month period.
Thank you, Uli, and thank you to your friends for donating so generously! This is a gift of much hope!
