ICT Classes - 2022

Wisdom leaning over student to point out something on the computer screen

Yahoo!  With a massive thank you to Alan Lawrence, we are pleased to share that we are able to provide after school ICT classes at Dekpor Basic School again for this school year!

We have a computer lab beyond anything in the entire region. There are 41 raspberry pi stations, thanks to our friends in Austria. And really, it all comes down to Philip Schäffer who is the key person behind the entire functioning of our current computer lab! Philip has visited Dekpor several times and with each visit he improves the lab for the good of the students.

We have a former sponsored student and ICT graduate, Wisdom, who is currently employed by us to instruct a keen group of 10 apprentices. Wisdom graduated with top marks, has proven his dedication to making a difference, continues to run a couple of the businesses at Dekpor Central Shops, and jumped at this special opportunity that was enabled by Alan Lawrence for the first time last year. (Alan is a former outreach volunteer who travelled from Toronto to spend the summer of 2016 in the village.)

Alan's donation allows us to hire Wisdom to teach. Classes started in January, with approximately 15 students per class, masked and distanced.  Currently, P 4, 5, and 6 are attending once a week for six consecutive weeks, and then it will alternate with JHS 1, 2, and 3 for the next six weeks.  These specialized ICT classes run after regular school hours and last for an hour to an hour and a half each afternoon.

We know that computer literacy will increasingly be required for employment in Ghana and we want to give as many interested students the chance to explore as we possibly can!

Thanks, Alan, for making these classes possible!
