As you know, the vast majority of the people living in Dekpor are destined to a lifetime existence as a subsistence farmer, barely making ends meet. But, if a kid successfully learns how to play a brass instrument, it opens doors for their future.
A musician can be hired for gigs in performance groups or even have an advantage with their application to military service because each branch has its own brass band. It's a big, BIG deal, because both scenarios equate to guaranteed income--something that is hard to come by in rural Ghana.
We have been very fortunate to receive so many instruments from the music department at Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School! The spring donation had an added beautiful surprise--inside every instrument case was a hand-written note from one of the Aurora students, encouraging the Ghanaian recipient to practice hard and enjoy their musical journey! Oh, my heart! What a kind thing to do!
